Electro Savings Credit Union Teams Up With Teachers

Electro Savings Credit Union has joined forces with local teachers to improve basic financial literacy knowledge among middle and high school students. The credit union has begun offering teachers and students in the St. Louis area free access to Banzai, a nationally-renown financial education program. Since last fall, St. Louis area teachers have enrolled over 820 students in this innovative, web-based financial literacy program.

"Banzai's Life Scenarios give students exposure to the financial dilemmas which come with adulthood," said Laura Mugge, community development specialist for Electro Savings Credit Union. "Our credit union's goal is to prepare teens with the financial know-how to make smart, confident choices and reverse the national trends impacting financial literacy."

The Banzai program is geared toward middle and high school students. It teaches such core money management principles as living within your means, dividing income between short- and long-term wants and needs, setting aside money for emergencies and making tradeoffs to stay within budget.

"Some of these students have not yet really experienced much money management personally, so the Banzai program is such a useful, real-life and engaging simulation of what it is like to have expenses," said Jaclyn Gammon, family and consumer science teacher at Parkway West and Parkway Central High Schools. “These are skills they will use constantly throughout their lives.”  

Electro Savings Credit Union also offers free customizable classroom presentations to support elementary, middle and high school teachers in their efforts to teach students about money management, the proper use of credit and more.
