Arsenal CU Helps Consumers Get ‘Money Smart’
As part of a public awareness campaign, Arsenal Credit Union held five seminars and two shred/recycle events between April 20-27, 2013. These events helped consumers better manage their personal finances and protect their identity.
The credit union joined forces with other local businesses, financial institutions, schools, libraries, nonprofits, government agencies and the media during “Money Smart Week” to stress the importance of financial literacy. This marked the second year the St. Louis metropolitan area participated in this national effort and the first year that Arsenal had done so.
“When we learned there were very few classes held last year in Jefferson County, where our headquarters is located, it was an easy decision for us to get involved,” explained Ken Moser, vice president of marketing at Arsenal Credit Union. “Financial education is an integral part of who we are and what we’re all about.”
During the week, the seminars covered topics such as basic financial planning, buying a home, the wise use of credit and identity theft, using speakers from MEMBERS Financial Services, First Integrity Mortgage Services, ClearPoint Credit Counseling Solutions and the Missouri Attorney General’s Office.
To kick off the week, Arsenal held free shred and recycle events at two of its branches, which resulted in 8,910 pounds of paper and 7,790 pounds of recyclables (electronics) collected.
Wrapping up the week was a special educational session for children titled “The Trouble with Money,” given by Jenny Remes, an employee of the credit union. This particular presentation also coincided with Arsenal’s participation in National Credit Union Youth Week. As part of the latter effort, four members won $25 in random drawings held by the credit union; members age 18 and under who deposited money into their savings account during the week were automatically entered.
Arsenal is no stranger to seminars. Earlier this year, they hosted various seminars during America Saves Week (Feb. 25-March 2).
