Looks like we have a young super saver at Electro Savings (St. Louis, Mo.)! Amara, 8, of St. Louis, recently won the National Youth Saving Challenge, which is sponsored by the Credit Union National Association (CUNA).
Amara was automatically entered into the CUNA drawing when she made a deposit. As one of the 10 winners, she received $100 to further build up her savings account.
“She was thrilled to hear that she won,” said Lisa Farnen, vice president of Marketing for Electro Savings. “Her mom helped her open the savings account in September 2012, and she encouraged Amara to save part of her allowance every month, plus a portion of any gifts she receives.”
Since opening the account, Amara has been making monthly deposits. What is she saving for? College, of course! It’s what any forwarding-thinking little lady would do.
In addition to the national drawing, Electro Savings sweetened the deal by offering a free St. Louis Zoo Youth Pass to any child under 12 who had a Super Savers account or opened one during the 2013 Youth Week. Kiddos could also participate in a Super Sleuth coloring contest. A child ID kit was given to anyone who turned in a coloring page.
For every $50 deposited into a youth account, Electro Savings donated $5 to the Children’s Miracle Network. They teamed with other St. Louis credit unions in this effort to raise funds for CMN.
The 10 young winners were drawn randomly by CUNA on May 15, 2013, and each winner received $100. During Youth Week, 117,244 youngsters deposited more than $25.2 million at 224 participating credit unions. Next year, National Credit Union Youth Week will be held April 20-26, 2014, and the Saving Challenge will run the entire month of April.
