Credit unions in Missouri celebrated International Credit Union (ICU) Day by sharing the “Don’t Tax My Credit Union” (DTMCU) message.
ICU Day is celebrated on the third Tuesday of October to reflect upon the credit union movement’s history and to promote its achievements. The ultimate goal is to raise awareness about the great work credit unions do around the world and give members the opportunity to get more involved. During the week of International Credit Union Day, which took place on October 17, "Don't Tax My Credit Union" efforts provided a way to raise awareness and involve members.
Missouri Credit Union Association started off International Credit Union Week by wearing DTMCU t-shirts during a staff training day. St. Louis Community Credit Union (SLCCU) staff members wore DTMCU t-shirts on ICU Day and snapped photos to send to their federal lawmakers. These photos were shared via Facebook and Twitter with the hashtag #DontTaxMyCU. The social media posts also directed fans and followers to the Don't Tax My Credit Union website, where messages can be sent directly to Missouri's federal lawmakers about this issue.
"We are proudly sporting our "Don't Tax My CU" t-shirts and spreading the word with our members. It's truly a great day!" said Dorothy Bell, SLCCU vice president of marketing and community affairs.
Missouri's federal lawmakers have received nearly 14,000 tweets, e-mails and phone calls from credit union members since May 22, telling Congress “Don’t Tax My Credit Union.” There are 64 credit unions in Missouri that have participated in the "Don't Tax My Credit Union" effort by sending at least one message to lawmakers. Nationwide, credit union members have made more than 1.1 million contacts as part of the national grassroots campaign. More contacts are still needed.
Congress is working on a comprehensive tax reform bill, with an initial bill anticipated this fall. The focus of Don't Tax My Credit Union is to maintain the credit union federal income tax status and stop lawmakers from raising taxes on 96 million credit union members nationwide. Credit unions are encouraged to engage staff, volunteers and members in getting the message out to the public and lawmakers about credit unions.
