In response to a recent Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Request for Information (RFI) relating to the home mortgage loan-closing process, in early February the Missouri Credit Union Association (MCUA) filed a comment letter with the agency using data collected by Credit Union National Association (CUNA) regarding seventeen specific questions that were raised in the RFI. Specifically, the CFPB is interested in developing a more streamlined, efficient, and educational mortgage closing process. The seventeen questions posed by the agency covered areas including consumers and closing, errors and changes at closing, other parties at closing, closing documents, and improving closing. While it is not clear at this point what next steps the Bureau intends to take with respect to mortgage closing, MCUA knows that studying the process further is the next step in the agency’s Know Before You Owe initiative. MCUA will continue to monitor developments in this and other mortgage areas in the coming weeks and will share any pertinent updates with credit unions.
