Employee health and wellness was the focus of 2011 Employee Appreciation Week at Arsenal Credit Union (Arnold).
The special week was packed with events and activities for staff, including free onsite wellness screenings by CHC Wellness; $5 flu shots; free 15-minute chair massages from a professional massage therapist; presentations on topics such as stress management, self-esteem, staying safe, parenting, good nutrition, and money management; free lunches served at each presentation; a dress-down day; and many giveaway items and drawings. The giveaways included a water desk game for stress relief, a free Smoothie at McDonald’s and a free ticket to see a movie. Prizes awarded in drawings included shirts, a multitude of $5-$25 gift cards to various local stores and eating establishments, five $75 Visa gift cards, and two Dell Netbooks (small laptop computers).
“For each of the past several years, we have set aside one week to make employees feel extra-special,” explained Lori Crutchley, vice president of human resources at Arsenal. “Employees eagerly await this week, and we enjoy coming up with different ways to show our appreciation for them each year. This year we wanted to demonstrate how much we care about their overall well-being – physical, mental, emotional and financial.”
Perhaps the most-popular activity of the week was “Bring Your Pet to Work Day,” which was spread out over three days to accommodate every employee who had a pet at home. Many employees brought in their dogs, while one brought in her pet guinea pigs.
During the week, the credit union also rolled out a “bucket program” to get employees thinking about the good feelings they carry for themselves and the good feelings they give to others. Each employee received a small metal bucket containing items, some for personal enjoyment and others to share, such as “thank-you” note cards and a mini “recognition” card to send with personal comments of their own to fellow employees via interoffice mail. Once a month now, a department is randomly selected, and employees work to fill their “bucket” on the credit union’s Intranet with kudos and positive comments.
As a follow-up to Employee Appreciation Week, staff was treated to sub sandwiches and desserts the following Monday.Photo Caption: Employees’ four-legged friends got a taste of what it’s like to work at Arsenal as they spent a day at work with their owner.
