Missouri U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill has joined as a cosponsor to the Senate ATM disclosure bill, S. 3204, making both Missouri U.S. Senators supporters of the legislation. Sen. McCaskill became a cosponsor on June 11, joining Sen. Roy Blunt (R).
S. 3204 would amend the Electronic Fund Transfer Act (EFTA) and eliminate the physical ATM fee sign requirement. H.R. 4367 is the House bill addressing the same issue, which was introduced by Missouri U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-District 9) and has 95 cosponsors. Missouri cosponsors include U.S. Reps. William Lacy Clay (D-District 1), Emanuel Cleaver II (D-District 5), Sam Graves (R-District 6), Billy Long (R-District 7) and Jo Ann Emerson (R-District 8).
H.R. 4367 and S. 3204 would eliminate the EFTA requirement for a physical ATM fee disclosure notice. Instead, only an electronic disclosure on the screen of any fee that may be incurred by the ATM user would be required. While maintaining important consumer protections, this helps protect credit unions from frivolous lawsuits.
The House Financial Services Committee will hold a June 27 markup session on H.R. 4367. The hearing is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. CST. Missouri credit union representatives will be in Washington, D.C. for Hike the Hill and will observe the hearing.
Missouri credit union staff and board members are encouraged to contact both Senators McCaskill and Blunt to thank them for their support of the ATM disclosure bill. Additional contacts to House representatives who are supporting the bill are also recommended.
Reaching out to the Senate offices also provides an additional opportunity to ask for the Senators’ support of S. 2231, the Credit Union Small Business Jobs Act, which would raise the credit union member business lending cap from 12.25% to 27.5%. The House bill is H.R. 1418. Out of the House members listed below, U.S. Rep. William Lacy Clay (D-District 1) is the only one also cosponsoring H.R. 1418.
