Missouri Republican leaders have selected State Representative Jason Smith (R-District 120) as the Republican nominee for the 8th Congressional District seat vacated by Jo Ann Emerson. The decision was made on February 9, after six rounds of balloting by the Republican committee members narrowed the field down from thirteen hopeful candidates. The final round of ballots included Smith, Lt. Governor Peter Kinder and former State Senator Jason Crowell (R-District 27).
Smith will compete in the June 4 special election against a Democratic candidate, who has not yet been selected.
Emerson, who held the seat since 1996, officially stepped down from Congress on January 22. She now heads the national Rural Electric Cooperative Association.
Smith is 32 years old and from Salem, Missouri. He currently serves as Speaker pro tem in the Missouri House of Representatives.
Residents of the 8th Congressional District can still contact existing regional Congressional offices in Missouri if in need of assistance. However, there is no District 8 office in Washington, D.C. until a new member of Congress is elected.
