U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver’s (D-District 5) 9th annual barbeque provided credit unions in the Kansas City area with an in-district meeting opportunity. Congressman Cleaver is a member of the Financial Services Committee, the primary committee for credit union issues and concerns in the U.S. House.
The fundraising event took place at Congressman Cleaver’s house on June 1. It featured special guest Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-Maryland), the U.S. House of Representatives Democratic Whip.
Credit union representatives from CommunityAmerica Credit Union, Kansas City Credit Union and United Consumers Credit Union took part in the annual barbeque.
“The event was packed, but I still had the chance to meet with Congressman Cleaver and remind him about the importance of maintaining the credit union federal income tax exemption,” says Eric Jones, president/CEO of Kansas City Credit Union.
Chris McCreary and Jay Neathery from United Consumers Credit Union also participated. "We had an opportunity to talk with Congressman Cleaver and thank him for his support, plus express our concern about the tax issue," says McCreary.
The Missouri Credit Union Association will schedule credit union-specific meetings in Missouri with our congressional delegation in August. Credit union staff and volunteers interested in participating in federal in-district meetings are urged to email Amy McLard, vice president of Federal Legislative Affairs, or call 314.542.1370.
