Elva Ross, a long-time member of Arsenal Credit Union, knew she was in for something special the moment she arrived in Chicago on the first day of her Credit Union Magic Minute Sweepstakes experience. She was welcomed by the sweepstakes sponsor's committee members, who greeted Ross and the other winners with signs and balloons as they arrived at the airport’s baggage claim area. From there, the experience just got better.
Ross and her husband, Donald, along with Arsenal employee Ken Moser, were chauffeured from the airport to the historic Palmer House in downtown Chicago. A cocktail and dinner reception gave Ross and the other sweepstakes winners a chance to meet and mingle, reflect on their credit union relationships and review logistics for the next day. Professional videographers captured all the pre-event excitement.
Ross was one of only 10 credit union members across the country to have their names drawn from a pool of thousands. To be entered into this drawing, members had to use their credit union credit or debit cards at least two times per week during the qualification period. The grand prize for each sweepstakes winner was the opportunity to load an oversized shopping cart with as much merchandise as the two-person teams could grab from the shelves of a warehouse stacked with flat screen TVs, video game consoles, computers, home appliances and thousands of other high-end goodies.
“It was the fastest 60 seconds of my life,” says Ross. She explained her and her husband’s shopping strategy and shared they retrieved most of the things they set out to get. “The excitement, the adrenaline, all the people hollering and cheering us on – it was overwhelming and exhausting.”
The 10 credit union members, along with two other teams who won the Magic Minute for charity, collected over $100,000 in top-brand merchandise, which was shipped directly to their homes. In addition to all the merchandise collected from the warehouse shelves, each winning member received a $200 prepaid card to use for incidental expenses in Chicago as well as a $275 Nike gift card to use in-store or online.
“The Magic Minute gave us a great opportunity to reward a member for their loyalty and give them the thrill of a lifetime," says Moser, vice president of Marketing for Arsenal. "We were so happy we could be a part of it. Arsenal definitely will be offering the Magic Minute Sweepstakes again next year!”
