Credit union representatives gathered at Missouri Credit Union House in Jefferson City to meet with Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-District 9) on August 13. In addition to discussing bills and issues in Congress, Luetkemeyer urged credit unions to make advocacy a priority.
“It is important for your organizations to advocate on behalf of your members,” said Luetkemeyer. “Right now you have a very important opportunity to really affect the political landscape and weigh in with your concerns.”
Luetkemeyer is a member of the House Financial Services Committee and has introduced several bills and efforts that address credit union concerns. These include:
ATM Fee Disclosures: H.R. 4367 / S. 3204 (S. 3394)
The House bill was sponsored by Luetkemeyer) and passed by a vote of 371 – 0 in July. Now, the bill is in the Senate where it is being stalled by unrelated matters. The Senate Banking Committee leadership has combined the ATM bill with a piece of legislation designed to protect the privilege of information submitted to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). This combined legislation (S. 3394) is being held by Senator DeMint (R-SC) for reasons unrelated to either issue.
Privacy Notification: H.R. 5817, the Eliminate Privacy Notice Confusion Act
Remittances: A Dear Colleague letter, co-written by Luetkemeyer, encouraged Members of the House to sign-on to a letter encouraging the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to delay and study the impact of its proposed remittances regulation. MCUA asked the Missouri delegation to support this effort, and it was signed by U.S. Reps. Todd Akin (R-District 2), Billy Long (R-District 7) and Jo Ann Emerson (R-District 8).
Representatives from the following credit union organizations participated in the meeting:
Conservation Employees Credit Union
Employment Securities Credit Union
MECE Credit Union
Mid Missouri Credit Union
Missouri Credit Union Association
United Credit Union
Lawmakers are currently back in-district during the August Congressional recess. The Missouri Credit Union Association is scheduling meetings around the state, to allow credit union representatives the opportunity to discuss credit union concerns with minimal time out of the office.
