CFPB Overdraft Protection Rulemaking Delayed: Missouri Input Requested

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has delayed several rulemakings, including one concerning overdraft protection (ODP). Initially, the CFPB was expected to provide a proposed rule affecting ODP in February 2015.  The ODP rulemaking is now anticipated on the docket for July 2015.

Fifty credit unions participated in Missouri’s Project Zip Code Month this past October. But there’s still time to count your credit union members.

Project Zip Code (PZC) is a secure computer program that helps determine how many members credit unions have in state and federal legislative districts. This information demonstrates the size and strength of the credit union movement to lawmakers and makes it less likely lawmakers will pass legislation that negatively affects credit unions.

With lawmakers back in Washington, D.C., there’s no better time for Missouri’s credit union advocates to share concerns about data breaches and the need for action. The data breach at Home Depot cost credit unions nationwide an estimated $60 million based on a recent survey. In addition, breaches at Schnucks, Target, Michaels, Jimmy Johns, Staples, Dairy Queen, K-Mart and others add to the financial impact to consumers and the credit unions that serve them.

Missouri’s Credit Unions Feel Impact from Home Depot Data Breach

The Home Depot data security breach hit credit unions hard, including credit unions in Missouri. The total cost to Missouri credit unions is estimated at $759,408, with a nationwide cost of nearly $60 million. These incurred costs include reissuing debit and credit cards, dealing with fraud and covering other costs once the breach was disclosed in September.
