Prior to GAC, Banks Ramp Up Congressional Activity

As nearly 50 Missouri credit union representatives prepare to join thousands of credit union leaders at the Governmental Affairs Committee (GAC) in Washington D.C. next week, the banking industry is ramping up activity on Capitol Hill.  According to the CEO Update newsletter, the American Bankers Association (ABA) is flying in more than 1,000 executives to meet with members of Congress on March 20. The following day, more than 4,000 credit union executives and board members will make office visits.

Letter to the Editor Calls Out Bankers for Unfair Attacks

The St. Louis Business Journal printed a letter to the editor written by Missouri Credit Union Association President/CEO Mike Beall in its March 2-8 edition.  Beall is responding to an article printed in the February 10-16 edition, where Joe Stieven of Stieven Capital Advisors attacked credit unions and misrepresented efforts to deal with the corporate credit union crisis.

Send Comments to CFPB About Overdraft Protection Programs

Missouri credit unions have an opportunity to weigh in on overdraft protection programs with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).  The Bureau is asking for information regarding overdraft programs and their costs, benefits and risks to consumers.  In addition to financial institutions, consumers and third party processors are also being asked to share their comments. The CFPB states that it plans to use the information to evaluate any potential consumer protection issues raised by overdraft programs

Corporate Tax Reform Proposal Excludes CUs

Credit unions escaped mention in a proposed framework for corporate tax reform released by the White House and Treasury on February 22.  The 25-page plan calls for making a wide range of corporate tax law changes in order to lower the overall corporate tax rate across the board to 28% from 35%.
